Nearby

Otaru is compact and walkable. Everything below is within 10-15 min on foot:

  • Otaru Canal — the iconic stone warehouses and gas lamp-lit canal. Best photos at dusk. 5 min walk.
  • Sakaimachi Street — glass shops, music box museum, sweets shops. You're on it.
  • LeTAO — famous cheesecake. The flagship double-fromage is worth it.
  • Otaru Sushi Street (Sushi-ya Dori) — multiple high-quality sushi restaurants. Otaru is known for fresh seafood.
  • Otaru Beer — craft brewery in a historic stone warehouse on the canal.
  • Otaru Music Box Museum — large collection of antique and modern music boxes in a Victorian-era building.

Ryan notes

Otaru is one of the calmer tourist towns in Hokkaido. The canal area gets busy midday but empties out by evening. An evening walk along the gas-lit canal is atmospheric and quiet. The architecture here — stone warehouses, brick buildings — is more Ryan's style than natural landscapes. The hotel itself is brand new (2025) and positioned at the quiet end of Sakaimachi near the canal, not the busy middle section.
