Day 1 — May 2 (Sat): Arrive & Do Nothing

Arrival

Check out of Century Marina Hakodate by 11:00 AM. Whether you drive or take the train, you'll arrive mid-afternoon — perfect timing for the 3:00 PM check-in.

Club check-in

You're Nonokaze Club guests — check-in happens at the private Club lounge, not the main lobby. Complimentary snacks and drinks in the lounge throughout your stay.

Afternoon — settle in

This is not a "go explore" afternoon. You've been moving between cities for a week. The room is 56m² with a private hot spring bath looking out at the lake.

  • Ryan: Bath, lounge, do nothing. The room is the activity.
  • Dennison: Walk the lakefront promenade (5 min from hotel), photograph the lake and Nakajima Island, or join Ryan in doing nothing.

Evening

Dinner is included

Le Vent buffet (Hokkaido luxury buffet) — dinner service 5:00–9:00 PM. No reservations, no planning, no decisions. Just show up.

Fireworks at 8:45 PM — Toyako Onsen runs a nightly fireworks display (late Apr–Oct) launched from the lake. Visible from the hotel — no crowds, no standing around. Watch from the lakefront walkway or from your room if the angle allows.

Wind down

In-room hot spring bath after fireworks. Lake, dark sky, warm water. This is the point of the whole stay.

Day 2 — May 3 (Sun): One Thing, Then Rest

Golden Week

May 3 is Constitution Memorial Day (national holiday). The Mt. Usu Ropeway and lakefront may be busier than normal. Go early if going at all.

Morning — split

Mt. Usu Ropeway (Dennison solo or together if Ryan feels up to it)

  • 10 min drive or taxi from the hotel (~¥2,000). The ropeway goes up to a volcanic crater — Mt. Usu erupted in 2000 and the crater is still steaming. Panoramic views of Lake Toya, Nakajima Island, the Pacific Ocean, and Mt. Yotei.
  • Allow 1-1.5 hours total including the ropeway ride and walking the summit trails.
  • The ropeway itself is the main event. No long hikes required.
Who enjoys what
  • Dennison: One of the best panoramic photography spots in Hokkaido. Volcanic landscape, caldera lake, mountain backdrop.
  • Ryan: Primarily a landscape experience. The volcanic geology and ropeway engineering have some interest, but this is optional — the room is a perfectly valid alternative.

Lakefront promenade (together, low-key)

  • 5 min walk from the hotel along the lake shore. Public foot baths (free), sculptures dotted along the path. Calm, flat, easy. 30-60 min.

Toyako Visitor Center / Volcano Science Museum (together, indoor option)

  • Small museum about Mt. Usu's eruptions and the caldera geology. Walkable from the hotel. If the weather turns or you want a quiet indoor activity, this fills 30-45 min.

Lunch — the only meal you need to plan

Only unplanned meal

Breakfast and dinner are included. Lunch is the only meal to sort out, and the hotel doesn't serve lunch.

Options in Toyako Onsen town (all walkable, 5-10 min from hotel):

  • Boyotei — popular cafe overlooking the lake. Curry, pasta, light meals. Calm atmosphere.
  • Toya Marche — small local food market near the bus terminal. Quick and easy.
  • Or grab something from Toya's small convenience stores — stock up if you want snacks in the room.

Afternoon — rest

Built-in downtime. In-room onsen. Club lounge snacks and drinks. Nap. Laptop. This is what the Nonokaze booking is for.

Evening

Dinner option

Le Vent buffet again, or if Dennison agreed to the N-Vague upgrade (~¥11,000/person), tonight is the night for a 9-course French-kaiseki fusion with Toya Wagyu. Only 4 groups, adults only, calm and intimate. See hotel dining details.

Fireworks at 8:45 PM — round 2. Different viewing spot if you want, or same as last night. In-room onsen after.

May 4 — Departure to Otaru

If keeping the rental car

  • Drive to Otaru directly (~2.5 hrs via expressway through Sapporo) or stop in Sapporo for lunch en route.
  • Drop car off at Toyota Rent A Car Sapporo Station Shop (Kita5-Higashi1-2-4, Chuo-ku) — return deadline is May 5, 20:00, so you can return it anytime on the Otaru day or the next day.

If no rental car

  • Nonokaze return shuttle: Departs resort 10:00 → JR Sapporo Station 12:30. Then JR Hakodate Line to Minami-Otaru (~45 min). Arrive Otaru ~13:30. ¥1,000-1,500/person — book in advance.
  • Alternative: JR from Toya Station to Sapporo (~2 hrs), then transfer to Otaru (~45 min). Total ~3 hrs. Requires getting to Toya Station first (bus or taxi from resort).
  • The shuttle is simpler — door to Sapporo Station, no transfers. Allow time for lunch in Sapporo during the connection.

Previous: Hakodate (Apr 30 - May 1) | Next: Otaru (May 4)

Practical notes

Key reminders
  • Meals: Breakfast and dinner included both nights. Only lunch needs planning (May 3 one meal).
  • Konbini: Limited in Toyako Onsen. Stock up on snacks at Hakodate before departing, or grab basics from the small stores in town.
  • Club lounge: Free snacks and drinks throughout your stay. Use it.
  • Pace: This is two days of rest by design. One optional activity (Mt. Usu / lakefront walk) on Day 2. That's it.
  • Golden Week: May 2-4 falls during Golden Week. The town itself is small enough that crowds aren't a major issue, but the ropeway and lakefront may be busier than normal. Go early.
  • Fuel shock: If keeping the rental car, Lake Toya has limited fuel stations. Top up in Hakodate before departing. See fuel shock analysis.
